Rob D.Hi Dan,
I would just add that the debate of what qualify as many Hall of Famers' "first" cards never seems to end. Some people say that a minor-league card counts. Others say it must picture the player as a major-leaguer.
Some collectors want only a card that was issued on a national level; others say that regional issues are OK. Even the definition of what constitutes a "card" can be heated. Does a 6x8-inch photo from a team-issued picture pack qualify? I think many would say no, but some like to consider those "cards."
Finally, in the case of a few players, their first cards are so rare (possibly only one known) that a collector could not realistically expect to acquire them for his or her HOF collection. So then a Plan B must be formulated.
So though a list will be helpful, in many cases you'll need to make the call on a particular Hall of Famer.
Good luck!
