RichardFrom the book "Collecting Football Cards", by Mike Bonner:
"At the same time, a startling development occurred in 1964 when Topps was pushed aside by a competitor, the Philadelphia Gum Company. Philly Gum produced it's first set of NFL cards in the fall 1964. Philly Gum outbid Topps for the NFL license, and, nowhere else to go, Topps outbid Fleer for the AFL license. This effectively shut Fleer out of the major football card market for the next 26 years."
