Jim VBIn those days, the Yankees drew around 20,000 a game. (Baseball Reference shows 19,352 per game for 77 games, but I don't think they are considering doubleheaders.)
Edited to say- Looks like they played 10 home doubleheaders in 1955. That raises the average attendance to 22,240 per date. Still lots of empty seats.
In any case, given those numbers, empty seats were not a rarity.
