Default Topps Fakes listed in SCD

Posted By: Anonymous

At page 423 of the 2008 SCD Catalog there is a listing for Topps "Promotional Samples". A minature 62 Mantle is pictured and the listing says that they were created in the 1990s and involve pictures cut out of the Topps Baseball Cards Book, or Topps Smurf books, pasted to cardboard, with notation on the back than they are a Topps promotional item. Once Bob Lemke put them in the Catalog, I had to have one. I ended up with a 64 Aaron from ebay. I have no idea if the seller knew it was a fake.

Not long ago a seller offered me a Topps "1955 Ring". It was a cheap plastic ring with a small picture of a 55 baseball card on it. These too apperar to be picutures cut out of the Topps Baseball Cards Book.

I forget what year, but SCD also lists fake metal ingots that at one time were being sold on ebay as part of the Topps Gallery of Champions, aluminum, bronze and silver sets. Since it was in the Catalog, I had to have a few of those too ( I already had all the boxed Gallery sets in each metal). That guy did know he was selling fakes.

Do you think a fake that makes it into the Catalog actually thereby gains a certain collectible quality ?
