Actually, my thinking is similar to Kevin's in that I believe this card is actually an E122 Ferd Schupp, and instead of leaving the name/pos/team visible through the frame they placed on the E121 cards they remade (which is the set we call E122), they had his name/pos/team on the frame up they did.

The players real name was Ferd and supposedly there are 2 versions in the E122 set, one listing "Ferd" and one with "Fred". I am wondering if this was their way of "correcting" their mistake.
