I think size is a reason, but not the primary reason.

The cards are folded, that is a main reason. Another main reason is that two players are depicted on a card. Generally, with wide pens, R312s, and the like, cards with single subjects have higher prices than those of multiple subjects, generally (there are exceptions to that, such as that beautiful card of Mr. Mack and Lefty Grove, but they're both legitimate Hall of Famers).

I think size is an issue, but it is less of a reason than that fold and the multiple subject reasons. Trailing size would be the cigarette company, Mecca. They did other sports cards, and other cards, but this is their only baseball issue. I think that hurts them a tiny bit.
