JoannDave,
I noticed the same thing instantly on the one I bought about two years ago. The blue immediately around the head is much deeper and bluer than the general background blue. It is a really beautiful color, and to me was one of the more striking features of the card. It shows up in person much more than on a scan.
So I absolutely look for that every time I see a Matty Black. And if I ever upgrade mine, I wouldn't buy one without the deeper blue halo.
I'm not sure why, but for some reason I was thinking that it had something to do with the card manufacturer changing blue ink after the first 1909 run? There was a thread on here quite awhile ago that blues in the first series are less deep and blue than the blues in the subsequent series for the same cards. But heck, I'm not even sure Matty Black was in the 150 series, so I could be all off in the weeds on that.
