In 1960, only 5.3% of children were born out of wedlock. In 2007, that percentage has risen to 37% That is not to impune single parents who work so hard at their job of raising children. However, there are quantifiable gains in a variety of social and personal areas where there is an active father and mother in the life of a child. That translates to society benefiting as a whole. That's not to say the sky is falling. I think there are many communities that are realizing this problem, particularly the African-American, and are introducing positive initiatives to combat this.
