Mark Macrae was nice enough to send me a quick message about Levy:

"The player is Rube Levy, and was touted years ago as 'One of the
earliest Jewish baseball stars' in the California League. There were
numerous mentions of Levy in John Spalding's "ALWAYS ON SUNDAY" , the
definitive book on California League baseball, as well as a SABR
article many years ago in Baseball Research Journal (I recall).
He is Jewish..."
