Definitely see what you mean - big difference between your two scans. For what its worth, my scanner is the same as Richard's - the PSC 2210.

Haven't checked the product docs to see if there is a fundamental technology difference between the 22xx and 16xx product lines but the scans certainly have a lot to say!

I think your price-point recommendation is the key. I don't remember what I paid, but it was likely in the $100-150 range, not the $75-100.
