Default SCD Listens - Vintage Catalog on CD.

Posted By: Bob Lemke

I can just about guarantee there are no team designations (other than in the cases of well-known variation cards) on the CD. Reason is that the team information was never captured in the original data base (which was begun around 1981) from which the catalog has grown.

When the data base was conceived, the simple fact is nobody thought team indications were needed. Back then complete set collecting was the norm, and team-set collectors were few and far between. Years later, we did add a field for "Team" to the data base, but did not have the resources to go back and retroactively fill it in for the (then) tens of thousands of cards already included. Also, by the early 1990s the "new" card issues had exploded to such an extent that the data was being input on the basis of card company press releases of checklists, rather than card-by-card examination, and the card companies generally didn't include the team designation in their press information.

Today, if I was in charge of the Standard Catalog data base, I'd go back and try to add that team info. With a resouce like this forum (which, remember, didn't exist then), I think team designations could be relatively easily compiled based on the collections of this forum's participants; at least for 90% of the vintage sets.

After the company (Krause) passed from the hands of collectors to those of the bean counters, some brilliant "suit" from management would suggest we do mini-catalogs of all Yankees or Red Sox cards. They always dropped the notion once it was explained it would cost some money to put the data together.
