Well, open auctions can get pretty wacky too, such as when two or more bidders with virtually unlimited resources are in 'must have' mode.

I suppose I would be immune to shill bidding if I could put an absolute value on a sports collectible item, completely independent of what it is worth or might be worth to anyone else. I just don't see how that's possible.
