This is a neat little set. I took an interest in it and began collecting it not too long ago. Fortunately there are several board members, such as Andy Cook, who were willing to share information with me regarding this issue. Because of the generousity of a few individuals, I've been able to get pretty far on a Series 1 player set and thought I'd share those cards with you all.
Forgive the small scans, I had to get these all on an image that wouldn't stretch the screen and that would meet the maximum Net 54 image size requirements.
A couple things I've noticed - like Andy says, the 1931 series tends to include minor leaguers and players with "former" in the caption. However I've noticed some other differences in the cards. If you look at the group I posted below, I believe all these are from 1925, you can see that the captions are inconsistant. Some of them are centered at the bottom, others are seperated into the left and right corners. There's several little nuances in the captions that you can spot if you look close.
Here's an example - look at the Quinn and Rommell cards in the 4th row. One lists him as playing for the Philadelphia Athletics. The other as "Philadelphia A." The font on Rommell's card is slightly heavier too.
Another font example is the two Burns cards. One is heavily bolded, the other is much lighter.
Another obvious difference I've noticed is that some of the cards are pure black and white photos while others seemingly have brownish/sepia overtones. Any significance to that difference between the cards?
Hope this little "gallery" helps someone out there with their research. I don't have any of the 1931 series variants unfortunately but this group is only missing a Cobb, Ruth, Johnson, Hornsby, Gehrig and Spencer for completion.
