T206Collector...on the purpose of grading. If you have a numerical grade on a strip card, you are being provided with information about the card's condition, in addition to its corners. An SGC 98 W5XX is just a card that has essentially no imperfections -- and one that was obviously cut after distribution.
By calling such a card only AUT, you do not know anything else about the card's condition -- e.g., creasing, paper loss, wrinkles, etc.
Grading is best used to learn about the quality of a card when you don't have the card in hand -- and sometimes, even if you do, so you don't miss hidden or hard to find imperfections.
But if you are using grading to rank the condition of cards against each other, then doing this with strip cards will drive you crazy since they were cut after distribution.
