LeonEd- That sort of proves the point. I don't think you would have seen any higher prices if they had been vg. The buyer of all of those (I think it was all but it was at least most) is not condition sensitive, as I said earlier when referencing the Just So with the Frankenstein crease down the whole card right through his face. I think he, like many other old time set collectors, are completists first and condition sensitive far less. If he needs the ones in REA I would expect them to go fairly high too. I understand it takes 2 to Tango but if he needs them and there is another strong bidder it will be strong prices. He is a large whale many times.... We shall see.
Anthony- ssssshhhh....No doubt they could do it but I doubt it would be real easy. Plus I know when I see the overprint cards I put my "BS alert" senses on and in high mode.......and look much harder at the card. I can't say I have seen any overprints, besides some Johnson Confectionery (sorry AL) that I understand were stamped in the 80's illigetimately, trying to be pawned off as real. Actually I have only heard these Johnson overprint stories from very reliable sources but have not seen them myself. I think they were in green but could be wrong. Regards
