Default Wahoo Sam Crawford a long time coming

Posted By: Stephen Mitchell

Sign me up with those who believe Sam Crawford ranks among baseball's greatest ballplayers and his selection for the Hall of Fame was a credit to the Veteran's Committee of the 1957. (And, by extension, a significant oversight by the Baseball Writers of America Association which had ably picked off most of the obvious Hall of Fame candidates up to that time.)

The current year marks nine decades since Wahoo Sam hung up his spikes for the last time (September 16, 1917). Had he not finished up a few years before the lively ball was introduced, Sam surely would have been among the game's first 400 home run hitters. As things stand, his statistics are mighty gaudy; that they were accomplished against varying degrees of Dead Ball play testifies only to his outstanding accomplishments.

The posted card is from Crawford's final season. It is from E135 (Collins-McCarthy Candy Co.).

As an aside, my son (in his capacity as a paramedic) transported Wahoo Sam Crawford's son to a local hospital about ten years ago.
