Mike,

Good eye! I was able to lick my finger and scrape off the "schmootz" with my finger nail. However, I have said "schmootz" in an airtight petrie dish and can re-apply if so desired. Lastly, after cracking out cards its a good-idea to put them in a plastic screwdowns which might flatten the card out every so slightly which probably accounts for the upper-right.
