And how many American lives were saved?

We'll never truly know but I believe that I've read various military analysis that stated that the US would have had up to 1MM casualties from an invastion of the Japanese mainlands. That doesn't include estimated Japanese casualties - obviously from the other number I included my memory is somewhat faulty as its been several years since I last studied WWII in depth.
