Hi Rick,
I think it was more to do with the quality control than anything else. Nobody cared in 1909 if the card in the pack was off center, miscut, or off color, they only cared about having a job. I think the majority of the cards were produced at the "acceptable size" while another 5-10% were produced larger or smaller. It doesn't take a grader or a rocket scientist to tell only someone who's handled a few hundred or thousand.. Be well Brian
