JCBack in 1980 I attended an estate auction in New Jersey and one of the lots included an original sealed envelope mailed from Sporting Life magazine that said "Series 3" on it. When I examined the envelope it was obvious that it had never been tampered with. Won the lot and I couldn't even wait until I had pulled out of the driveway to open the envelope. Inside were 12 cards in near mint condition. And the cards were all different lengths. The shortest was at least 1/4 of an inch shorter than the longest. I'm sure that there are cards out there that are trimmed, but after that experience, I know for a fact that they were factory cut without much care given to uniformity.
