Steve MurrayKeeping scans (preferable) or digital camera photos of your collection is strongly recommended. You can pick up a cheap scanner for less than $200. I am not aware that scanning will cause any damage to a card.
Once you have scanned a card and saved in in your pictures it is recommended that you avail yourself of an service outside of your hard drive to store the cards. I use Photobucket. Then if you want to post a picture it is easy to paste a link to your post from Photobucket. It's free unless you want the "Pro" option that's about $30 a year.
