Your point regarding Jeter vs A-Rod is exactly the situation that existed in 1961 with Mantle vs Maris.

And, what many don't realize is that Mickey was booed a lot his 1st years and then when he won the
TRIPLE CROWN in 1956 the fickle Yankee fans started to cheer him. But, then if he didn't deliver every
time at bat after that year, they booed him again.

It wasn't till mid-season of 1961, when the BB fans realized the developing HR contest between Mantle
and Maris, that they finally started rooting for Mantle....and, haven't stopped ever since.
