Google "Stengel sparrow" and you will get different accounts, different dates, the crowd booed him, the crowd cheered him, he did it once, he did it again. Best I could find to confirm that it happened at all is this article from the NYT Archives, dated May 26, 1919:


(Ya gotta love old time sportswriting: "... the big left-hander had the horsehide acquiescent to his slightest whim.." ; another way of saying, I guess, that he was throwing strikes).
