In a hobby where alterations are severely frowned upon, why would an individual go to such great lengths to change the appearance of a card?

Both parties, as stated before, share the guilt.

My personal preference would have been to auction both cards in their unaltered states as a single lot. This would have allowed for a somewhat satisfying presentation for the collector (being able to view the missing ad on the other card) without destroying another card in the process.
