but to see these pop reports and all the criticism they get...it's such a damn shame that the companies aren't (can't be) more vigilant about ensuring a high level of integrity for these lists.

If these were thought to be 90% accurate, just think how much value that would add to the hobby! True knowledge on rarity/scarcity issues would dictate pricing environment that everyone would have more confidence in...to the extent that the graded pop reflects the total pop, of course, etc etc etc...
ugh...such a shame!
