I think they were sold individually in stores. They had a paper backing attached on the back. Someone Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they sold for 10 or 15 cents each in 1915. They are tough to find with a clear image and nice shiny borders. Here is one of my better examples as far as having great image quality plus a nice frame.
There are at least two know border styles, and also the images can be found with or without the name tag on the bottom. Actress and political figures were also pictured on PM1's.
