T EOne of the really wonderful baseball writers of the mid-20th Century. Put out four volumes of The Fireside Book of Baseball, the 1st of which I read repeatedly until the cover nearly detached from the book. That was published in the 50s. One of my favorite Christmas gifts of all-time was Fireside Volume 3, which my parents gave me in the late 60s.
Fireside was a wonderful eclectic collection of short stories, excerpts from novels and non-fiction works, cartoons, diagrams- the kind of book you'd want on a desert island, or a snow-bound cabin, or at a Condoleeza Rice press conference.
Einstein's career also was intertwined with Willie Mays, as both were in NY and shifted to San Fran at about the same time, Willie with the Giants and Einstein with San Fran Examiner.
I read Einstein's various books written with and about Willie many times.
I never met the man, but feel I have the right to say...Goodbye, old friend, and thank you for the countless hours of joy you gave me.
