Steve f All the variations. Risky move by Goodwin though it must have paid off. Expensive to print, but with photography in it's early stages and the other cards as drawings. I'd bet these were a extremely popular.
I wonder if all N172s were very sharp, bright and clear in their prime and just faded and yellowed over time.
I've sold many vintage HOF cards for capital, but can't imagine losing these low-grade commons.
