In my opinion, if you bid and win you pay for it. Otherwise it's the seller
being scammed. If there were obvious and major signs of scamming (like the card
is an obvious fake) I'd say you can back out after the auction ends, but
there aren't. Questions of seller reliability, feedback and payment methods
are legitimate but exist before an item is won.

Send the check certified. If you can convince the seller to accept PayPal,
that's fine too-- though the seller will be losing money by accepting PayPal.
