You've brought up legitimate arguments why McGwire should not be elected the first time. However, once this steroid controversy blows over, he will be elected.

With regard to pitchers like Koufax, Pedro, and Smokey Joe Woods, they are among the best but I would say that longevity is an absolute must. The Hall of Fame gives ballplayers a break when they make a player eligible after 10 years. For the superstars, we are talking about a 15-20 year minimum.

You guys have forgotten Walter Johnson and Lefty Grove. Their skills and longevity are legendary.
