GregJust to respectfully correct a previous post -- I don't think it's fair to say that Gerald Ford was a man who was never elected to anything other than the Senate.
Ford was elected to the House of Representatives 12 times -- that's a pretty impressive election record. He was also elected by his colleagues to the post of House Minority Leader, and had Republicans ever gained control of the House during that time, he would have been Speaker of the House. Ford was never elected to the Senate, although as Vice President he served as President of the Senate. While there are very differing views on his presidency, he certainly led an incredible life.
