I agree with Dylan. If you see something that you have a feeling might get shut down early, immediately put in a bid around 30-50% of your high bid. Sure, you let everyone know you are interested in it, but they probably know that anyway. The best piece I think I ever bought on ebay was the 1872 Boston team composite that was in my November auction. I actually emailed the owner and insisted that she not pull the item, that it was going to get plenty of bidding. She responded that she was swamped with offers but refused to pull it. The final bid was more than 50% higher than her top offer. She was obviously more business savvy than most sellers on ebay.
