The text was composed about a thousand years ago, but this particular one is about 150 years old. The red says, "Namo guru..." which means, "Homage to my spiritual teacher..." The scribe probably put it in red ink to emphasize the importance of the spiritual teacher in progressing along the path. It is a collection of poems describing the author's enlightenment experience. I have not seen the 1000 year old original (if it still exists), but the author may well have written those words in red as well.
