I agree that most cards with white borders will look better without them, and that the function of the border is to protect the picture area from damage. What I don't understand is why a card is graded harshly just because the border has served its function.
To me, not cutting the border off is a testament to the card's history. Perhaps a part of its provenance for all to see: "this card was not ferreted away from the others, it is a trooper"! I don't think that I would want to lose that badge of honor simply because I am too lazy to buy the proper size binder page.
