David SmithI was about 12 years old and an ad ran in the paper saying a guy was selling old cards. He had about 27 t 206's with this Cobb and either a Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson being the most famous (at least to me at that time). He wanted $75 for the Cobb and $50 for the other HOFamer (this was about 1979) with the other cards being a lot less expensive. I chose Cobb.
My parents were divorced and Mom was not making a lot of money so, I was going to have to pay for the card myself. I didn't have the money that night (a Saturday) but told the guy my Mom could bring the money when she came home from work Monday night. He agreed and I went back to the car to tell my Mom. She nearly had a cow!!
$75 was a lot of money at that time for us and I was going to spend it on a baseball card!! We argued for a couple of hours that night and she finally agreed to let me buy the card. Monday night arrived and Mom came home with the Cobb. She said she had talked to the guy and explained our situation and he agreed to lower the price to $50 dollars. To this day I do not know if the guy actually lowered the price or if Mom paid the other $25 dollars. Either way, Mom handed over the Cobb and $25 dollars. This is probably one card I will never sell.
