36 Goudey is a nice set for someone to collect in starting off. Not too many cards, no huge HOFers to break the bank and you can get EX condition cards in the $20-$30 range for 'commons'. Plus if you want to get really jiggy, try to collect the different backs or 1-2 players with different backs. They're not scarce but aren't all over the place either.
