I am more comfortable buying a slab if its a card that I can't see in person, feel, or smell. I do not hesitate in spending $$$ on cards I can do my own authenticating and grading, but for many of my purchases that is not practical.

I do not pretend to speak for all collectors and dealers, I just speak for me and my 31 years in the hobby.
