As a person who gets 95% of the cards I need via trades, this is the way I handle new swaps. I'll ask for a reference or two from previously completed trades. Most of the time I'm already familiar with the references mentioned due to the various trading groups in which I am a member. I'll contact one or two and if things went well then I'll send at the same time. If concerns are mentioned from those previous traders or if I don't happen to be familiar with the references, I ask that the requesting party send first and offer references in return. Upon arrival, and if item was as described, I send my end of the deal out the next day.

This scenario has worked for me for a long time and I have made well over 2500 successful trades in the last few years, with only a couple of problems.
