AnthonyFrank Slocum's book Classic Baseball Cards, The Golden Years 1886-1956 is a good start. Register with Mastro for $75 and as long as you bid everytime (win or lose) the catalogs will keep coming. And Alan Hagers book has some nice pictures.
Also, a subscription to Old Cardboard and the back issue run of VCBC are excellent reference material as well.
