to answer barry's question to sequence the full genome is quite costly, on the order of several hundred thousands of dollars(a few years ago it was on the order of tens of millions). however, to do simple testing like you see on tv crime dramas the cost is on the order of less then 100 dollars for small scall and even less for large scale and is quite a routine practice in modern molecular biology.
