Default 19c cards - how do I authenticate...?

Posted By: Marc S.

Hey:

As some of you may know - I have been quickly adding to my pre-war collections. I have only very recently embarked on the famed 19th century journey - and am quickly learning as much as I can about the many Philadelphia Nationals player cards that I want to add to my collection.

I understand that with some of the issues [say, N172s] - that a lot of the education can be done myself - through purchases, personally reviewing the cards, etc. Also, I can utilize SGC to potentially verify the original and unaltered nature of some of such cards that I add to my collection.

However - I'm pretty clueless with some of the larger cabinet-style cards of the era. The grading companies do not grade them, I do not personally own any - and I'm just wondering how I can educate myself on issues such as these without a mistake that will cost my hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. I simply do not have ample experience with these issues to detect certain types of restoration, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated. I would also be happy to speak off-line, too, if anyone wants to e-mail me.
