cubguyI was the original poster on this thread. Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I was dumb enough to hit the Buy it Now on that Mathews "card," but not dumb enough to send any money before checking it out. When I confronted the guy about the legitimacy of the auction, he never responded. Big surprise there, huh? By the way, on Yahoo auctions (Thanks to Card Avenger for pointing that out), looks like this scammer has struck again. Someone's out $5700 for a bogus 1951 Bowman set. Sounds like from the negative feedback, the buyer's going to go after the guy. I hope so.
Anyway, I posted initially just to get some help on the auction problem. But I think I'll be sticking around. I've been reading the other threads and they're fascinating -- the occasional snide comment aside. I don't own any pre-WW II cards. Used to. I had a 1921 E121 American Caramel Ruth graded 4 by PSA, plus a few T206's. Unfortunately, had to sell them because my wife and I are in the process of buying a house and we needed money for a down payment. It was painful to part with them, but have a 1 1/2-year-old and priorities change. Once we get settled in the house and on our feet financially, I hope to start collecting again. And I'll definitely use this forum as a resource.
So thanks again. You helped save me a bundle.
