I think if he simply showed the scans and asked for some help in pricing the material, without revealing its source, someone on the board would have given him feedback. You don't have to say you own them, just simply say you are curious what some experts think these cards are worth. It doesn't reveal where they came from and there's no deceit. And it accomplishes exactly the thing he set out to do.
