Default Unique Dave Davenport card (Herpolsheimer)

Posted By: Paul

It looks to me like the publisher of the photos for these cards shopped them around one year (probably 1921) and found very few takers -- Herpolsheimer and Holsum bread. The following year, a few players were added, a few were deleted, and the American Caramel company decided to use the photos.

Davenport was one of the players dropped. Cicotte was apparently another. He is listed in Lemke's book for the Holsum bread set. I've heard that there's a Joe Jackson as well.

By the way, I think these cards are 1921, not 1920, because Maranville is listed with Pittsburgh. He wasn't with that team until 1921. I'm not sure how soon after the 1920 season Cicotte was banned from the game. If he was banned immediately, then it's a little difficult to explain why he was included in the Holsum set. Perhaps the Holsum cards are 1920 and the Herpolsheimers are 1921.
