Frankly, I don't think the Red Sox have a leg to stand on saying they "own" the ball especially in light of the fact that they encourage players to toss balls into the stands at the end of every half inning and game used equipment shows up for sale all over the place. Unless they said somehting beforehand, it was poor planning on their part.
Wouldn't it be rich (no pun intended) if George Steinbrenner found out what Doug Mientkiewicz's price was and paid it?
