tboband we discussed two items, mostly: first, that SGC doesn't grade cards with the "authentic" label abd second, that SGC is brutal on its grading of caramel cards. The guy I spoke to on the phone, Scott, was very cordial and expressed the opinion that perhaps the refusal to grade cards as "authentic" would be changing in the future because of the growing interest in having cards from sets which are commonly "hand-cut" graded. Case in point is the 1909 Obak set in which it is common to see handcut cards as opposed to the 1910 and 1911 Obaks sets in which you almost never see hand-cut cards.
Scott acted a little taken aback when I mentioned SGC's brutal grading of caramel cards. I did tell him that I thought the grading was generally consistent and less subjective with respect to whom the submitter was than other companies but he appeared a little surprised at the opinion that their caramel card grading was so harsh. Anyone who has seen EXMT cards with a tiny bit of back damage come back as 30 (2 Good) knows exactrly what I am talking about, not to mention the nice creaseless cards with some light corner wear which come back 20 or 30. They are super tough.
