PASJDI agree fully that this episdode -- and others I have heard about -- gives one some pause about the competence of grading companies. What concerns me most, frankly, is that the volume of cards they review suggests that they have very little time to spend inspecting any given card, although one hopes that on issues more likely to be vulnerable to alteration for economic gain -- prewar cards and expensive cards generally -- they take more time. However, it is an imperfect world, and it seems to me especially given that most cards today are purchased without visual inspection that reliance on third party grading is far better than the alternative. It also appears from the example given in this thread that a grading company will acknowledge an obvious mistake, which further reduces one's risk. Just one man's thoughts.
