On the semi-vintage side, this was done in a way by the Vancouver Mounties of the PCL in the 1960s. When bats were cracked, they would have them sawed in half, signed by the team members and mounted on wooden plaques. The team year was then scripted on the plaque. While not rare, they are pretty cool items to see.
