petecldI've been thinking along the same lines myself lately. The last time I was showing my collection to a friend the most fun we had was going through the darn Star Wars cards I still have from 1970s and 80s - his mom had thrown his out years ago.
I've realized that somewhere along the line I stopped buying because I wanted to and bought because I thought it is simply what was expected. No, I'm not giving up candy cards, just diversifying my collection.
The last really fun time I had collecting was a few weeks ago when my buddy and I opened a box of 2004 Topps Heritage cards I bought. Gum still su**ed but we chewed every last one. His dad even loved them because they looked just like the 1955 Topps cards he had bought when he was a kid.
To quote a Sheryl Crow song - don't laugh - truth is truth:
"It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you have."
