From a beautiful little 1912 book of baseball verse I picked up on ebay recently, here's a stanza pertinent to this discussion:

And once, as all boys knew by heart,
Napoleon's name was Bonaparte,
But every urchin knows today,
His name's Lajoie (or Lajoway).
